I have placed .aspx page and .ascx user control in the same directory and now facing error

The page 'products.aspx' cannot use the user control 'item.ascx', because it is registered in web.config and lives in the same directory as the page.

Can't I place both in the same directory?

There is some issue with Microsoft development practices. I have done extensive research on this and have found no satisfying answer about the same.

Please refer this link, where Microsoft clearly mentions When a source is specified, the user control itself must not be in the same directory as the page. If it is, you get a run-time error when you attempt to load the page. but they don't have clear reason.
